Midterm elections are coming!* We want to mobilize our community to use their greatest power – their right to vote. But we need YOU to help. We’re hosting voter registration events at all our open community events from July through October. We are providing voter registration forms, wifi and a tablet for people to check their registration status, and we’ll throw in a Forever Stamp for anyone who registers by mail. We are looking for volunteers to set up and hang out at the registration/info table for a couple of hours. You can bring your handwork and chat with folks about voting rights and why exercising our rights is important.
We’ll also have a list of actions that anyone can do to stay engaged and energized in American democracy each week. VOTE is a verb – let’s do this.
If you are looking for a tangible way to encourage voter engagement we highly recommend Postcards to Voters. Register as a volunteer, get an address list, and send out postcards to total strangers with upcoming elections. It’s one of the things Virginia has done to feel like she’s helping every day.
*Did you know that only 36.4% of eligible voters voted in 2014!?! That’s lowest voter turnout in 70 years. Let’s do better, shall we? And don’t think that Cambridge, Massachusetts was 100% – in some precincts only 21% of voters turned out!
